Safety Data Sheet

Product Information

Osmo Decking Oil is a premium decking oil giving outstanding results and designed to provide long-lasting protection for all types of wood, including hardwood and softwood decking.

It's easy to apply, and will help to protect your decking from the elements, while keeping it looking good. It's also water-resistant, making it perfect for outdoor use and will also help prevent algae and mould growth which can make your decking look unsightly.

The microporous finishes are based on natural vegetable oils and allow the wood to breathe and regulated moisture content. By doing this swelling and shrinkage is reduced. The penetrated finish will not crack, flake, peel or blister.

Osmo Decking Oil Preparation

Before the initial treatment, bare wood species with a high concentration of natural wood extractives must weather off (for at least 4 weeks) or be cleaned with Osmo Brush Cleaner and Thinner.

For resinous wood to become more absorbent, such as Douglas Fir or Larch, it must weather off for at least six weeks. It takes at least three months for pressure-impregnated wood and tropical species like Massaranduba, Bangkirai, Garapa, and Iroko to weather off. For cedar to become more absorbent, a 3 month weathering interval is necessary.

Before application, thoroughly clean, lightly sand existing microporous stains, or fully remove old varnishes. Certain new wood species must be aged as instructed above before any sanding is done to restore their absorbency. It is advised to only sand to finishing grades of P120 or lower. When sanding, always wear a dust mask. Apply the initial application to all sides of the wood, if at all possible, and before installation if the wood is absorbent.

The state of the wood is one of several variables that affect the finished surface. A test application is therefore usually necessary, especially on uncharted surfaces. Pre-treat the wood, if possible, on all sides, if further protection against blue stain, decay, and insect attack is desired (e.g. soft woods).

Application

Use an Osmo Flat Brush or a lint-free cloth (for furniture, for instance) and apply thinly and evenly along the wood grain to clean, dry wood surfaces.
We advise using the Osmo Decking Brush (150 mm), which was designed specifically for decking and enables you to apply the finish while standing, for a quick and simple application.

Don't forget to ventilate properly while drying. Drying will be delayed by lower temperatures and increased humidity levels. Apply the second coat, also thinly, when it has dried.

The second coat should be applied with clear Anti-Slip Decking Oil 430 if a less intense colour is preferred. The level of UV protection supplied is typically higher the richer and darker the colour chosen. Using clear Anti-Slip Decking Oil 430 as a standalone finish is not recommended since it provides insufficient UV protection.

Maintenance

Regular Cleaning: Damp cleaning with diluted Osmo Decking Cleaner using Osmo Decking Cleaning Brush.

Occasional Maintenance: If necessary, intensive cleaning and refreshing using Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel or Osmo Gard Clean ( for green growth).

Recoating: Simply re-apply one coat onto the clean and dry surface when signs of wear become visible.

Osmo Decking Oil Additional Information

Osmo Teak-Oil 007 is a clear decking oil finish, therefore it provides only minimal UV protection (greying).

For fence panels and screens, we suggest Osmo UV-Protection-Oil/UV-Protection-Oil Extra as a clear top coat. For decking, one coat of a coloured Osmo Decking Oil should be applied before applying the clear Anti-Slip Decking Oil 430. Higher pigment protection provided by Clear Anti-Slip Decking Oil 430 strengthens the finish's resistance to wear and the elements.

We advise inspecting the finish at least once a year for places that are particularly mechanically demanding (like decking) and eventually repainting the surface with the proper finish. Ribbed or grooved surfaces, as well as rough (sawn) wood surfaces, absorb more product per square metre than smooth surfaces because of their surface characteristics.

This stuff has no UV filter and will also "darken" your wood as it replenishes the oils

Bought instead of Sadolin deck oil which I've previously used on softwood decking, Osmo gets good reviews for hardwood so gave it a go.Teak oil clear is just that, has no UV filter, and no colour / stain but will "darken" the wood and give it a rich varnished, some say wet look. Really brings out the deck though. The most impressive part of this is the way that water beads on the surface whereas in the past it was partially absorbed. This does lead to puddles on the deck but rather that than it getting absorbed. As the side of the can says use light coats, this stuff goes a long way. Half the can gave approx 18sqm two coats applied by brush.

Great oil

Point to note, natural is NOT clear. It does have some tan colouring. Otherwise, very happy.
